Though we've seen little true cold and only a virtual dusting of snow this year, musically the era has never been more frigid. January and February are turning out to be great months for Black Metal and Doom, and of course, there's always loads of classics to keep it cold. Some of the best Black Metal & Extreme Doom from 2011. Honestly, narrowing down the Black Metal for this show was a pain in the ass. Lots of great stuff this year, as usual visit the links to find GREAT places to buy this in North America. The music should pretty much speak for itself Though I have on correction as I do reference Leviathan's "True Traitor, True Whore" not being on my year end list, when in fact it is.

Also, you'll notice at the top of the second hour that the Bethroned track is bolded in bigger text. This is because G.D. from Bethroned was kind enough to send one of the final pre-release tracks from the upcoming "...Tragedy of War" full length. You can be assured I'll keep you folks in the loop on when that comes out.

Sound and the Power it Holds: Remembering Chuck

Wow, 10 years. It's sort of weird knowing exactly what you were doing 10 years earlier at certain hours. There was lots of talk about Chuck, learning for many of us, lots of Death, and definitely sadness. We just hung out and listened to Death at a band house. Of course, I did my tribute at the time on WUPX in Marquette, MI, but now knowing how green I was I could have never given proper tribute. Today I'm able to do so.

Death's music alone set Chuck Schuldiner in the top tier of Metal. However, in an era where lyrics are often overlooked (I admit to doing this myself), you very often see talk of Chuck's incredible lyrics. Place this as complementary to the revolutionary sounds coming from his guitars, and it should be pretty easy to see why Chuck Schuldiner is such a legend. Its this lyrical prowess that lead to the title of this 'cast. No Death song that has had more impact on me than "Flesh and the Power it Holds" from 1998's "The Sound of Perseverence." That impact is heightened by the fact that Chuck's death was brought on by cancer. When thinking about a title I wanted to try to play off a Death song, and "Sound and the Power it Holds" was the first idea that came to mind. I think that title says it all.

This ‘cast is two hours of Death and Death covers. I decided to not include any Control Denied simply because there is just so much Death material that has only barely seen the light of day. Much of that material can also only be handled in smaller doses by some people because of the production values of these tracks, often, ripped from cassettes from 1984 to 1987. I decided to take the opportunity to bring to light some of the absolutely great tracks that never made it out of Death’s demo era. Not including Control Denied is not in any way meant as a slight to that material.

As I amend this entry on 12/15 (as the ‘cast started streaming on yesterday), I can say I that it was very cool to see tribute for Chuck coming from a lot of different folks into different kinds of Music, not just Metal. Though I'm sure there were many rabid Deathcore fans rolling their eyes about the coverage of this anniversary (I did see someone post, then delete a comment about how Chuck wasn't as important as "The Rev"), I would hope that those who will remain heavy music fans for their lives would be able to come around to see how important Chuck was to the sound even bands like Suicide Silence, Avenged Sevenfold (well, early...), and Emmure play.

Seeing the other tributes to Chuck over the last weeks does my heart good. It’s great to know that Chuck is not forgotten, for he shall never be.

Perpetual Winter Productions: Perpetual Winter November 2011: Finland/United States

Another week, and I decided to just say fuck it, expect the 'casts on Mondays. Monday works anyway, especially if I get any pre-release tracks and the timing works out to play a day before the release. As usual lots of good Black Metal and Atmospheric Dooom, this time all from Finland or the States. Perpetual Winter Productions: Perpetual Winter October 2011

The first of multiple releases in this relaunching of Perpetual Winter Productions. I probably should have done one of these closer to the start of this project, but disorganization and piss poor planning have plagued me throughout. So, here it is, the show that spawned the overall moniker for everything I do. This is the show that mirrors a daily personal playlist most closely as my evening playlist is almost always Black Metal & Doom.

Perpetual Winter is meant to be the soundtrack to an evening, or the early morning hours. If you engage yourself entirely in the music you will be rewarded, but its not entirely necessary as these shows are more about setting a rather mellow mood in a room. You aren't going to find lots of over the top aggression in Perpetual Winter. In fact, in recorded form I have a hard time using the term aggressive to describe this music at all. This is relaxation music at its finest in my mind.

Really I haven't much to say about this 'cast other than its simply the neck wrecking bliss that you should expect from "From the Depths." However, a couple things of note came up while I was doing this write-up. First of all, you'll notice that some of the albums below are not links. This would simply be because other than used copies, rare auctions on eBay, or off the wall independent distros are the only way you are going to find them. I know the Nokturnel is due for a re-issue pretty soon, and the Jumpin' Jesus is dying for one at least. I was really caught quite off guard at how rare Cadaver's 2004 opus "Necrosis" has apparently become.

Regarding the album title links: This is just a good place for those of us in North America to get said album. It may be the label directly, a distro I trust, or a large reputable distro. This time 'round I have to say there are some really good deals on the Vanhelgd & Cannabis Corpse CDs.

Blasphemosity: 2011 Smoldering Embers First Wave

There is actually a Blasphemosity I recorded in March or April sitting in the can right now, and at some point I'll probably release it. The main reason I bring this up is the opening track of this cast is the opening track of that cast. Even more importantly, the opening track Aurora Borealis' "Crucible of Creation" is the opening track on Ron Vento and company's first full length since re-forming, and its free. Of course, since then Mr. Vento has made the entire Aurora Borealis catalog free and you should go here and check it all out. Great stuff available there, I highly recommend doing so.

Anyhow, its a good year for blackened Metal. There really isn't much to say about this cast except its what you should expect, 1 hour of face ripping blackened metal. It includes some of the final recordings of the Helmkamp/Read project Kerasphorus, a track from Enslaved's newest completely free EP, and I'll introduce you to a Progressive Black/Death troupe from Rochester, MI called Einheuser. A very special "Sucking the 70's" this month, at least for the Marquette area, as last week there was a big Rock/Metal announcement by the real only local music venue not located in a house ;-), my employer Upfront & Company in Marquette, that the national tour of Weedeater (Southern Lord), Saviours (Kemado) Bison BC (Metal Blade), Fight Amp (Translation Loss) would be making it a stop. Its a special ALL AGES show on September 18th (Sunday), tickets are $10 in advance (here - (906)228-5200) or $12 at the door. I've driven farther and paid more for a lesser show. You can preview all the bands on this tour in the first set.

Really this is bigger news for Marquette than some people may realize. When I was a teen I heard all these stories about Ozzy, Kiss, etc coming and playing Lakeview Arena in the 80's. Well, I personally remember Def Leppard played there about 15ish years ago. However, since then, other than a few shows by NAE (who I has fallen victim to playing to the hip-hop monoculture way too often) and First Aid Productions (which has some good people helping out, but I still wonder if they haven't lost the vision of the founders), Marquette has been fairly devoid of any touring Rock/Metal band not travelling completely under the radar (the Upfront does get some very interesting acts including many who have releases on major labels). There are two big reasons for this, one being the advent of the casino shows in the U.P. (which other than not being in Marquette I can only see as a good thing), and the simple fact that in general entertainer fees have gone up over the last 20 years, but our wages have not. So Marquette isn't going to be booking Nickelback or Colplay very soon (not going to rule out NAE, but I still guess they don't travel the road of Rock), and that's fine. Odds are you aren't going to see too many washed up rockers in Marquette either.

However, I know a town that still eats up live music when it can. Small groups that you can't target every week, but spaced out over time and with many niche groups it can be very profitable. The advent of the internet has given niche fans more exposure to their music than ever, and that gives those that book shows an opportunity to look at more up and coming artists, and artists that don't have the benefit of RIAA promotional/radio backing (even Sirius Liquid Metal hardly steps outside the RIAA umbrella). A successful Weedeater show will allow more tours of all genres to come to Marquette, this is an opportunity to remind the Rock World that Marquette still rocks and that bands should want to come here.

Enough of that though, lots of good stuff this month outside of the Weedeater Tour Preview. New music from Wino's newest project Premonition 13, some early 70's Swedish (or German Rock no I'm not kidding, I have conflicting reports) from a band that (once again) has almost no information available, I'll introduce some more great Michigan Stoner/doom, and of course, its July so the most appropriate tune from Bongzilla in the 4:20 Smokedown. So get your utensil packed and ready to go, its time for July's Sucking the 70's.

From the Depths: Independence Day - The Metal of Anti-War

Well, I started with the idea of making a podcast full of "protest" Metal, and well, I succeeded, but it ended up being a far more narrow focus than initially intended. It's funny that a genre of music that contains music referred to as "War Metal" could be so very much anti-war, but from the earliest days of heavy music the angst of war has played an important role. Some of you may be thinking, why would you highlight war protest around the celebration of U.S. independence? The answer is simple. I view Independence Day as a time to absolutely celebrate the historical accomplishments of our nation, but also a time to reflect on our shortcomings. Unnecessary war is definitely one of those shortcomings (and I'm not innocent in my support for what I now view as unnecessary war). You will hear a lot from Paul Speckmann in this hour, which really shouldn't surprise you. Speckmann has always been very anti-Corporo-fascist/anti-war and very critical of our nation, so much so that legendary U.S. Death Metal troupe Master is now based out of the Czech Republic. I respect Speckmann's music and I respect his actions even more.

This show is going to be a lot more diverse than most "From the Depths," as there are definitely some tunes better fitted for "The Mercyful Metal Onslaught" or "Sucking the 70's," however, it was necessary to cover the bases in (anti-) war themed heavy music.

Yep, been a bit behind on my plans with PWP lately. A hand injury and bursitis flare up tend to slow one down so that's just the way things go. At least, we're getting the 6th straight monthly installment of "Sucking the 70's." I have a new 'cast in the "Northern Outlaw" series in the can as well as "Blasphemosity: 2011 Smoldering Embers First Wave." Those will be coming shortly, but right now I have another hour of kick-ass Stoner jams.

This month on "Sucking the 70's" we have a good chunk of Midwest rockers, and a lot still active so get out and see them. I have an off the wall blues based track from defunct Detroit rockers Cuckold, new Red Fang & Thorr-axe, and I'll introduce you to the smoke-laden Sludge from Grand Rapids, MI's Mountain Goat.

A few corrections, I referred to the Thundermother album as "One Red Rowan" obviously as you can tell from below its "No Red Rowan." I also said that Herder's release was independent, but it turns out that it is in Reflections records.

There is quite a bit of this music available for free (also some with physical versions as well) so check out the links in the playlist below. All links lead to legitimate ways to get the music, mostly the label that released it. Obviously, there will be situations where there are better sources.

From the Depths: 2011 Still Bleeding Volume 1

When I first started researching this show I was under the impression that this is one of the worst years for Death Metal in recent history. I can't say my opinion on this has changed, but I can say that it's not quite as bad as I initially thought and I'm already going through my files complaining about forgetting bands like Russia's The Mutilator and Sweden's Vanhelgd. I guess the next one shouldn't be so hard. That being said there is a lot of good stuff so far this year. Some of my personal highlights include Benighted's "Asylum Cave," Decrepitaph's "Profane Doctrines Unburied," and I have to say I've been left surprisingly impressed by Obscura's "Omnivium." Anyway, this 'cast doesn't really need a long-winded explanation it's all new Death Metal, not hard to figure out.

Introducing: From the Depths

"From the Depths" was the first new show moniker I came up with after I returned from my nomadic period in 2008. When I was on Open Grave Radio (many OGR alums are on Brutal Existence Radio I decided to retire my "Pure Evil" moniker (though it was un-retired for my brief stint with BRR). I was trying to think of another name that would really exude what the show was about that wasn't so commonly used, as I knew I was at least the second to use "Pure Evil" at WUPX in Marquette.

I have no idea how I came up with it. I assume I pulled it from a line like "From the depths of the underground comes..." It just made sense. Its not like there was much being spun on there even from the surface of the underground. I've come across a few bands that use it in a variety of genres and a couple movies, but nothing really from this realm so I've decided to stick with it.

The show would become a solid mix of Aggressive Black Metal, Death Metal, Black/Death Metal and some extreme Thrash. Initially I would include other broadcasts such as the "Mercyful Metal Onlsaught" and "Perpetual Winter" since I only had the one time slot, but as I spread out over pretty much an entire day I was able to streamline "From the Depths" into it's current incarnation.

"From the Depths" will continue down the aforementioned path. It will also include a feature called "Still Bleeding" which will be the best of new Death Metal. "From the Depths" new music will focus on Death Metal as Blasphemosity focuses on the more blackened material. The debut of "From the Depths" is already in the can, but is a special edition. "From the Depths: 2011 Still Bleeding Vol. 1" will go up shortly. As with all my 'casts at this point, except "Sucking the 70's," there is no timetable for releases. They'll come as they do, but "From the Depths: 2011 Still Bleeding Vol. 2" is already poking my brain.

Remember when you could turn on the radio and get a nice selection of rock that actually flowed, that sounded like it was selected with some care? Hell, every now and then the DJ would actually throw in something that surprised you? Well, actually I’m pretty sure I don’t, but I do know that it existed. Yeah, it still exists today in limited forms on Satellite and some very small independent local & college radio stations, but overall those days seem behind us. This show is a great substitute for the glory days of radio. It’s just a kick back, smoke a bowl, drink a brew maybe fist fuck the air at times rock show. I’m sure I’ll throw you plenty of curve balls while still including some names you’ve heard (that curveball may be harsh vocals in some instances as there are 2 tracks that contain them).

This month on Perpetual Winter’s “Sucking the 70’s” we have a total rock extravaganza. We have some proof that you can rock just as hard over 40 years after forming. Some well known sludgsters that have been silent on the album front for nearly a decade will grace the Devil’s Harvest. As usual you can expect lots of Sabbath worship, and hell, this month even a little Pantera worship. There’s something for all open minded heavy rock fans.

Corrections: Well, not so much a correction, but I need to point out that I didn’t actually mention the song title from Sourvein’s “Black Fangs.” The song is entitled “Nomadic.” Obviously, it is in the playlist below, but I like to acknowledge my blatant fuck-ups, and note that I chose not to go back and correct them.

A year ago the Heavy Metal scene lost the first almost universally recognized legend. Though the Metal scene has been plagued with sickness and death over the last decade, never has there been a death that impacted both Heavy Metal and the mainstream Hard Rock scene as much as when stomach cancer took Ronnie James Dio.

The two hour’s ‘cast that you are about to (or have) download(ed) is a compilation of music over his ENTIRE career. Outside of the off the wall XXX-Mas podcast I did, this without a doubt has the most diverse selection of music I’ve ever featured, from do-wop to Black/Death Metal. Of course, don’t worry all you mullet sporting leather clad warriors (or at least those that wish they could be) there are plenty of real headbangers that will bring you back to an era of Heavy Metal many think is dead (they’d be wrong, but what can you expect). I have to admit, outside of The Northern Outlaw, I never expected to have variety comparable to a cover of “Love Potion No. 9,” a Pat Boone number, Black Sabbath, and Aurora Borealis in a single cast. In the end it just goes to show that Ronnie James Dio’s impact on music is going to be hard to match by anyone. I’m not so sure that as these legends of the formative years Metal start to go that there is someone waiting in the wings to fill their shoes. Musicians like Dio have brought Heavy Metal and Rock music in general from infancy to late adolescence (as in development has definitely greatly slowed as we reach the capabilities of the instruments).

I would hope to see some U.S. dates, but let’s just say those hopes aren’t high as the United States is still too concerned with hip-pop to give this proper respect. Well, 4 for 4 so far this year in Sucking the 70's. Only one's been very late, I'd have preferred to get this one up yesterday but for whatever reason I procrastinated all day on Sunday and didn't get this beast done. Finished 'er up last night. I've had a lot of fun with this and I hope you enjoy the tunes and laughs you should get out of this. I've cited the movies samples I've used that were longer than a few seconds. All of the movies I recommend on various levels.

This is the second year I've done the 4/20 Holiday Show. I got the idea when I was a truck driver listening to Sirius Radio's Hardattak, and "High Times" writer Bobby Black, who also hosted a weekly Stoner Rock show called "Contact High" took over the airwaves that day and just jammed a bunch of rock. Of course, he had some high profile guests and general debauchery ensued. Now he did a good job with the music that day, though he really did seem to have a limited catalog, but he was able to take the focus off the music a bit with his access. Obviously I can't. So here we have 2 hours of kick-ass tunes, a little comedy and a lot of smoke.

As this is the 4/20 Holiday Edition of Sucking the 70's, I'm going to emphasize my recommendation for documentarian, and former Bill Hicks business partner, Kevin Booth's "How Weed Won the West." Along with throwing out recommendations for Booth's last movie "American Drug War: The Last White Hope" and the more comedic "Super High Me" from comedian Doug Benson and director Michael Blieden. The Booth films do a very good job of covering the current struggles for NORMLcy in this country. Admittedly there is no focus on some of the more legimiate concerns from the opposition, but as one would expect you will get plenty of laughs out of the standard, outrageous, opposition propaganda harpooned by film makers. I should point out that the film is hosted by Alex Jones. Now, in most cases where Jones is speaking I just shake my head at the NWO fearmongering. I may not agree with the man most of the time, but I cannot deny his effectiveness in this role.

Well, things have been going semi-decently the last couple months. Though my output isn't quite as I would prefer, I decided that I don't want to release any shows that I'm not completely happy with the format. Obviously, "Sucking the 70's" and "Blasphemosity" are pretty much set, this side of having to rip a whole shitload more movie samples (that quest will never end). As time goes on I'm working on getting show openers and segment intros for my other shows. Hopefully soon I'll have one for the "Mercyful Metal Onslaught" as I've already got a few solid shows tracked out. I should have that done by the end of the month.

This month on Perpetual Winter’s “Sucking the 70’s” it’s another O.G. Kush clam bake. We have great tracks from well known acts like Witchcraft and Grand Magus, probably new names to you in Russia’s Widowland and the U.K.’s Iron Void, and one of the most crushing tracks in their discography in. some brand new Crowbar.

In this month’s “Sucking the 70’s Flashback” I somehow managed to unintentionally have the “other” of some big names. I say unintentionally because I had decided to use the English Iron Maiden that formed in the late 1960’s, and the death of Gary Moore on February 6, 2011 inspired me to grab a track from, the should be classic, Skid Row’s 1970 full length “Skid” (This month’s show image is that album cover). So Skid Row and Iron Maiden in the Flashback, but sounds you probably aren’t going to recognize.

So pack up the bowl, roll another spliff, and get ready for Bongzilla’s return to the 4:20 Smokedown. It’s time for the haziest hour of music available on the net. Radio done the old way (minus the FCC), we are modern Pirate Radio (Great Movie Highly Recommended to all rock fans).

PURE BLASPHEMY AT A HIGH VELOCITY

Well folks, this is one of the more extreme 'casts you are going to get from Perpetual Winter Productions. The best blackened tracks out there, all blazing, all face ripping, pure blasphemy at a high velocity.

I was discussing this show with someone who has already heard a CD version. This person is being introduced to metal of this style (and in my opinion caliber) through these podcasts, and I realized how lucky he is to be able to do this. I remember 10 years ago buying certain CDs and being disappointed because it was "that kind of (Black or Death) Metal." It was early in my metal career and I had not become accustomed to listening to Metal with the open ear one must. Now, if every album had ALL good tracks and no filler this really wouldn't be a problem. That, of course, is not the case. With shows like Blasphemosity you are just getting a solid mix of some of the BEST tracks of some extreme styles. You don't have to wade through albums of filler, it's all good songs, and a great opportunity to tune your ear to listening to Metal. It may seem pretentious, but sometimes the truth just does, when you open your ears to Extreme Metal you have opened your ears to all music (if you so choose). Once you can separate a wall of sound in your mind then you can easily be looking at ALL music through a changed prism.

Anyway, either a Perpetual Winter (Atmospheric Black Metal & Extreme Doom) or my undecided Podcast coming up next week (I may just leave the 4th cast of the month open format because I have many shows and I just can't do them all regularly). Of course, expect February's Sucking the 70's on 2/20.

It's Fuckin' December... Happy Holidays

Well, I’ve thought about doing this in the past. I’ll be the first to admit that I actually enjoy singing some Christmas carols. I grew up a singer, and some of the stuff is just outright fun to sing. Anyway, there is definitely LOADS of bad music out there regarding this season. However, there is some fun, funny, and decent shit out there as well. This show has a lot of that. I’m not going to pretend to be a “big fan” of every song, and I’m fairly certain there is going to be a song on here that nearly everyone will be like “What the fuck was he thinking including this crap?”

Top Albums of 2009 coming out in May, eh? Well, I guess really it’s sort of like the now defunct Metal Maniacs. You got their top albums from the previous year in March or April, so that’s just going to be my justification ;-).

Anyway, this really was a fun project. In the past I’ve always had total control over what I played. This time the only control I had was the song chosen from each album. There is definitely some stuff that I did not check out last year. I will say that I don’t think there is a bad album on this list, though some I would never consider list-worthy. The Rise of the Northern Outlaw

Ten years ago I got my start in radio. It wasn’t on a rock station, and it sure as hell wasn’t WUPX, it was “The Giant 92.3 WJPD,” at the time the most popular country station in the Upper Peninsula. If there was some country event going on we were involved. I was a board operator there for about 2 years, I did some live shifts and every now and then I filled in for my buddy/co-worker as the board operator for local “celebrity” Elmer Aho. Most of the time though my job was running the board for sporting events, and, of course, you have the guy who ends up being polytheistic running the religious broadcasts on Sunday morning (I was atheist at the time). It was an entertaining crew on Sunday mornings, myself running the religious broadcasts and playing Christian country between news broadcasts beforehand, and on the AM side was one of my absolute influences and mentors (though I don’t think he knows this) “Little” Danny Rozman, a very liberal atheist with the mouth of a trucker. He would talk about how stupid our right wing content was and always rip on Dr. Whora Shitslinger.

Of course, the music was rarely up my alley, though a few pop country songs did stand out to me as they were just well written songs. There were a couple songs that just drove me right up the wall though, I would go in and check the playlist and remove them if I saw them. The first was John Michael Montgomery’s “The Little Girl” which asserted that a little girl’s parents were abusive BECAUSE they were non-believers. What a load of shit, and one of the standard myths pushed by Christianity. I will never have respect for that man after that song. The other song was by a young “phenom” named Billy Gilman called “One Voice.” Now this kid’s voice struck me right at the core and made me borderline homicidal. Though Gilman’s career isn’t over, it is certain that puberty put a major slow on his record sales.

I didn’t really start digging heavily into the world of Outlaw Country until I started to drive truck. Sure, I knew I enjoyed certain kinds of country, but I never took the time to get into it. When I was a driver I had Sirius Satellite Radio (prior to the merger with XM, it was just in talks and I was heavily in support), though most of the time I listened to talk radio (Sports, Leftist, Playboy) when I did listen to music more often than not it was “Outlaw Country” and “The Vault.” Strange that the metal station wouldn’t have even crept into the top 10 reasons I recommended satellite radio (though they have vastly improved its still just barely more than a glorified active rock station generally targeting the baggy pantsed trend crowd and playing the same stuff over and over to appease the old schoolers). I discovered lots of great music and started adding a little to my collection. Of course, Sirius/XM Outlaw Country doesn’t just play traditional country but include folk/rock, rockabilly, and some outright rock that really grabs the essence of the outlaw. I find this format to be the best and that is the route I am taking on The Northern Outlaw.

Before I get to the track listing I want to point out some critiques I have of my own work on this one. The first and most glaring to me is the forgetting of a line on the second voice track. I mention the movie “Slither,” but fail to mention that the track “Baby I Love You” was the in the credits. I could go back and fix it, but I’m just going to have to take close to a Lord Imperial stance on it and say it would take away from the essence of the show to fix that mistake. Also the first couple of voice tracks my voice is shaky on. I was recording those tracks at 2-3 am with vicious cotton mouth. It’s noticeable, but again it’s just in the essence of the show to leave it. Also, I call the Hellbound Glory song “Ballad of Scumbag Country” - “The Ballad of the Scumbag.” Overall I don’t think anyone should be complaining about this setlist, if you like country something in here should appeal to you. I’ll try to get one of these a month, but I’m not going to promise anything. However, without further adieu this is:

Once again that time is upon us. The news is going to be covering the 15th anniversary of the Oklahoma City Bombing, the 11th anniversary of Columbine and ignoring that its Hitler’s Birthday. However, all of those things around this date are irrelevant to the legions of connoisseurs of the green. It is on the date of 4/20 each year when those folks just want to get catatonic and hang out with like minds. Well, here’s a soundtrack for your 4 O’clock hour (start it at 4 and the 4:20 smokedown is perfect). I Can't Believe He Died Last Night: A Tribute to Peter Steele

When I woke up on Tax Day, I was planning on watching some Faux News and laughing at the teabaggers. This did not happen. Now, I lead a bar workers life so I’m up until some ridiculous hours of the night and get up later in the morning. Life lets me live that way right now so I do, so when I got up it was already confirmed that Peter Steele had died. I’ve never had a love affair with Type O Negative as some people have, but I’ve also not been one who has written the band off entirely. Sure, I’m not really a big fan of “Life is Killing Me” as a whole, but you still have two solid tracks from that album in this show. When memorializing Petrus T. Ratajczyk you can’t just pay attention to Type O Negative. Obviously the significance of really putting the eventual blight of a label Roadrunner on the map, and having sold millions of records worldwide has put a shadow over Carnivore (and Fallout was about as underground as you can get). Of course, you cannot deny the significance of Carnivore in the New York Thrash scene, though I’ll be the first to admit that I only have a passing interest in the music. There are definitely some good songs, and I can see where the thrash die-hards are all over it.

I know for a fact that some people will complain that I didn’t include enough Carnivore, but just compare catalog size. There will also be people who will complain that I didn’t include “Song A” (Love You to Death; yeah, I know), and again I have to say look at the catalog size. As for Fallout, I had never heard the songs until after his death, but they are rare as hell so I included both.

My first introduction to Type O Negative was back in 1998 when I went to college. I spent most of my high school years listening to the classics, but when I left the area for college I started to explore modern heavy music. I had already been wondering where it really was. If you look back on what I was listening to then, and compare it to what I listen to today there won’t be too many carry-overs. One of the things that really kept Type O Negative in my good graces were the vocals of Peter Steele. As a baritone/bass myself I really have a thing for a solid vocalist in that range and Peter Steele was that, and more.

In 2007 when I was an over the road truck driver I was taking a break in Springfield, MO and saw that Type O Negative had released a new CD. Rasputin was on the cover, and that was one of the few weekends that I actually had some disposable income, so I just bought it. I didn’t really know what to expect (you’ve read my thoughts on the previous release), but I was pretty blown away. “Dead Again” really grabbed me from track one. There were many nights I kept myself awake on the road by singing the title track. I’m quite disappointed that there won’t be a follow up, I was definitely looking forward to seeing where this crew was going to go.

Sucking the 70's - March 2010

After I was in radio for a few years doing strictly metal I felt the urge to really start to branch out. It was around this time that my fascination with progressive and hard rock from about 1967 to 1974.* I’m in the camp that none of the music released during this time is what we would eventually call heavy metal. Some songs absolute fit eventual molds, but overall the bands were generally just hard rock bands. They really weren’t doing anything to separate themselves from other hard rock bands. Blackfoot was heavy metal, so why weren’t Black Oak Arkansas or Lynyrd Skynyrd? I feel that most of the 70’s “heavy metal” bands were laying the foundation for what we would eventually call stoner rock and, of course, influencing a new sound that we call heavy metal, not just some arbitrary tag. However, that’s not really an argument I’m looking to start here, I’m just laying out the foundation for the show. So I took this theory and added modern stoner rock and some traditional/doom. Anything that really holds that vibe of the 70’s, the music of today that is “Sucking the 70’s.”

Now, I am well aware of the compilation series “Sucking the 70’s” which had two editions (2002 and “Sucking the 70’s: Back in the Saddle Again” released in 2005). Did I get this name from this compilation? No, however, it’s irrelevant. Honestly, what is radio if not a plethora of stolen ideas? Over the years “Sucking the 70’s” has morphed more into showcasing modern bands with the 70’s vibe along with exposing some of the very underexposed bands of the late 60’s and 70’s. Of course, some of this also had to do with the streaming radio I was involved with having a strict ban on RIAA material; which I limit here, but don’t outright refuse to use.

There’s all sorts of fun stuff in this one, and a few features. I may expand out into two one hour blocks as it feels a tad cluttered as a one hour show (with 3 features). Now, I’m not going to give anything further away, except I’d like to make the suggestion that you start this at the top of an hour. It’ll make one of the features that much more fun. So pack one up, put your lips on the piece and start “Sucking the 70’s”

The second part of the Top Albums of 2009 show. This one went a lot smoother for me, though there is definitely a fun cock-up that I'm not going to point out see if anyone catches it. This one was a bit of a challenge because I took some of the shortest (but still kick ass) songs from the albums and still came up with 57 minutes of music. Sure, I had to talk over an ambient part, but I crammed it all into a 1 hour recording so I'm pretty happy with that.

After listening to my debut podcast I have a few critiques (especially the clear fuck-up at the end of my last voice track, but I'll get to that), but overall I think its turned out fairly well. Especially considering I haven't done anything like this in 9 months (far too long). I'll be straight up and say that these shows are voice tracked and mixed not recorded live. Eventually it will lead to a far more professional sounding project (a compressor mic would help too). As I stated above there is a pretty solid fuck up at the end of my final voice track, but that SOB was so long and I hit it pretty solid up to that point... I wasn't cutting it again. Just remember 9 month hiatus ;-)....

I was really thinking about how I wanted to do this show since if I did it in order from 1 to 20 or 20 to 1 there would be absolutely no flow. This is one of my biggest critiques of that nightly joke of an extreme show I used to listen to on Sirius that sounded more like a hodge-podge of bullshit thrown together simply because they had to. I didn't want that so I figured lets just make the best mix I can from songs from the album. I decided that it was best for me to break it down into two shows as it would basically have to sound that way anyway with extreme followed by atmospheric or vice versa. As I type this I have not done the second show yet, as I'm still recovering from idiot patrol on New Year's Eve.

Eventually there will be both 1 hour and 2 hour shows being produced. I really don't like the single hour format as it really doesn't allow you to really express much, but lots of people don't want 2 hours so...

Either way this is the beginning of work that is 100% mine, at this point I answer to me, and anyone I choose to answer to will be exactly that my choice. I hope you fucks enjoy and expect a lot more cool shit coming in future weeks.
