From the Depths: Independence Day - The Metal of Anti-War

Well, I started with the idea of making a podcast full of "protest" Metal, and well, I succeeded, but it ended up being a far more narrow focus than initially intended.  It's funny that a genre of music that contains music referred to as "War Metal" could be so very much anti-war, but from the earliest days of heavy music the angst of war has played an important role.  Some of you may be thinking, why would you highlight war protest around the celebration of U.S. independence?  The answer is simple.  I view Independence Day as  a time to absolutely celebrate the historical accomplishments of our nation, but also a time to reflect on our shortcomings.  Unnecessary war is definitely one of those shortcomings (and I'm not innocent in my support for what I now view as unnecessary war).  You will hear a lot from Paul Speckmann in this hour, which really shouldn't surprise you.  Speckmann has always been very anti-Corporo-fascist/anti-war and very critical of our nation, so much so that legendary U.S. Death Metal troupe Master is now based out of the Czech Republic.  I respect Speckmann's music and I respect his actions even more.

This show is going to be a lot more diverse than most "From the Depths," as there are definitely some tunes better fitted for "The Mercyful Metal Onslaught" or "Sucking the 70's," however, it was necessary to cover the bases in (anti-) war themed heavy music.

Yep, been a bit behind on my plans with PWP lately.  A hand injury and bursitis flare up tend to slow one down so that's just the way things go.  At least, we're getting the 6th straight monthly installment of "Sucking the 70's."  I have a new 'cast in the "Northern Outlaw" series in the can as well as "Blasphemosity: 2011 Smoldering Embers First Wave."   Those will be coming shortly, but right now I have another hour of kick-ass Stoner jams.

This month on "Sucking the 70's" we have a good chunk of Midwest rockers, and a lot still active so get out and see them.  I have an off the wall blues based track from defunct Detroit rockers Cuckold, new Red Fang & Thorr-axe, and I'll introduce you to the smoke-laden Sludge from Grand Rapids, MI's Mountain Goat.

A few corrections, I referred to the Thundermother album as "One Red Rowan" obviously as you can tell from below its "No Red Rowan."  I also said that Herder's release was independent, but it turns out that it is in Reflections records.


There is quite a bit of this music available for free (also some with physical versions as well) so check out the links in the playlist below.  All links lead to legitimate ways to get the music, mostly the label that released it.  Obviously, there will be situations where there are better sources.

From the Depths: 2011 Still Bleeding Volume 1

When I first started researching this show I was under the impression that this is one of the worst years for Death Metal in recent history.  I can't say my opinion on this has changed, but I can say that it's not quite as bad as I initially thought and I'm already going through my files complaining about forgetting bands like Russia's The Mutilator and Sweden's Vanhelgd.  I guess the next one shouldn't be so hard.  That being said there is a lot of good stuff so far this year. Some of my personal highlights include Benighted's "Asylum Cave," Decrepitaph's "Profane Doctrines Unburied," and I have to say I've been left surprisingly impressed by Obscura's "Omnivium."  Anyway, this 'cast doesn't really need a long-winded explanation it's all new Death Metal, not hard to figure out.

Introducing: From the Depths

"From the Depths" was the first new show moniker I came up with after I returned from my nomadic period in 2008.  When I was on Open Grave Radio (many OGR alums are on Brutal Existence Radio I decided to retire my "Pure Evil" moniker (though it was un-retired for my brief stint with BRR).  I was trying to think of another name that would really exude what the show was about that wasn't so commonly used, as I knew I was at least the second to use "Pure Evil" at WUPX in Marquette.

I have no idea how I came up with it.  I assume I pulled it from a line like "From the depths of the underground comes..."  It just made sense. Its not like there was much being spun on there even from the surface of the underground.  I've come across a few bands that use it in a variety of genres and a couple movies, but nothing really from this realm so I've decided to stick with it.

The show would become a solid mix of Aggressive Black Metal, Death Metal, Black/Death Metal and some extreme Thrash.  Initially I would include other broadcasts such as the "Mercyful Metal Onlsaught" and "Perpetual Winter" since I only had the one time slot, but as I spread out over pretty much an entire day I was able to streamline "From the Depths" into it's current incarnation.

"From the Depths" will continue down the aforementioned path.  It will also include a feature called "Still Bleeding" which will be the best of new Death Metal.  "From the Depths" new music will focus on Death Metal as Blasphemosity focuses on the more blackened material.  The debut of "From the Depths" is already in the can, but is a special edition.  "From the Depths: 2011 Still Bleeding Vol. 1" will go up shortly.  As with all my 'casts at this point, except "Sucking the 70's," there is no timetable for releases.  They'll come as they do, but "From the Depths: 2011 Still Bleeding Vol. 2" is already poking my brain.

Remember when you could turn on the radio and get a nice selection of rock that actually flowed, that sounded like it was selected with some care?  Hell, every now and then the DJ would actually throw in something that surprised you? Well, actually I’m pretty sure I don’t, but I do know that it existed.  Yeah, it still exists today in limited forms on Satellite and some very small independent local & college radio stations, but overall those days seem behind us.  This show is a great substitute for the glory days of radio.  It’s just a kick back, smoke a bowl, drink a brew maybe fist fuck the air at times rock show.  I’m sure I’ll throw you plenty of curve balls while still including some names you’ve heard (that curveball may be harsh vocals in some instances as there are 2 tracks that contain them).

This month on Perpetual Winter’s “Sucking the 70’s” we have a total rock extravaganza.  We have some proof that you can rock just as hard over 40 years after forming.  Some well known sludgsters that have been silent on the album front for nearly a decade will grace the Devil’s Harvest.  As usual you can expect lots of Sabbath worship, and hell, this month even a little Pantera worship.  There’s something for all open minded heavy rock fans.

Corrections: Well, not so much a correction, but I need to point out that I didn’t actually mention the song title from Sourvein’s “Black Fangs.”  The song is entitled “Nomadic.” Obviously, it is in the playlist below, but I like to acknowledge my blatant fuck-ups, and note that I chose not to go back and correct them.

Perpetual Winter Productions: Remembers Ronnie James Dio

A year ago the Heavy Metal scene lost the first almost universally recognized legend.  Though the Metal scene has been plagued with sickness and death over the last decade, never has there been a death that impacted both Heavy Metal and the mainstream Hard Rock scene as much as when stomach cancer took Ronnie James Dio.

The two hour’s ‘cast that you are about to (or have) download(ed) is a compilation of music over his ENTIRE career.  Outside of the off the wall XXX-Mas podcast I did, this without a doubt has the most diverse selection of music I’ve ever featured, from do-wop to Black/Death Metal.  Of course, don’t worry all you mullet sporting leather clad warriors (or at least those that wish they could be) there are plenty of real headbangers that will bring you back to an era of Heavy Metal many think is dead (they’d be wrong, but what can you expect).  I have to admit, outside of The Northern Outlaw, I never expected to have variety comparable to a cover of “Love Potion No. 9,” a Pat Boone number, Black Sabbath, and Aurora Borealis in a single cast.  In the end it just goes to show that Ronnie James Dio’s impact on music is going to be hard to match by anyone.  I’m not so sure that as these legends of the formative years Metal start to go that there is someone waiting in the wings to fill their shoes.  Musicians like Dio have brought Heavy Metal and Rock music in general from infancy to late adolescence (as in development has definitely greatly slowed as we reach the capabilities of the instruments).

I would hope to see some U.S. dates, but let’s just say those hopes aren’t high as the United States is still too concerned with hip-pop to give this proper respect.  I’m sure there’ll be some dates, but expect to have to travel to major metropolitan areas (I don’t expect anything other than the biggest of the cities).

Also on www.RonnieJamesDio.com you can always find new, and limited, merchandise with the proceeds going to Dio’s Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund.  I would hope that most in the scene that are able,  support all efforts to eradicate this plague that has been so devastating to young and old, families, and communities (which would include the Heavy Metal Scene).

So now all you Leather-clad, Mullet-sporting, Neck Wrecking, Horn Throwing Warriors of the World unite together for these next two hours, let out a rebel/metal yell of “FUCK CANCER” and let’s pay homage to the Man, the Myth, the Legend, the Mighty Ronnie James Dio:

Sucking the 70's: Holiday Edition 2011

Well, 4 for 4 so far this year in Sucking the 70's.  Only one's been very late, I'd have preferred to get this one up yesterday but for whatever reason I procrastinated all day on Sunday and didn't get this beast done.  Finished 'er up last night.  I've had a lot of fun with this and I hope you enjoy the tunes and laughs you should get out of this.  I've cited the movies samples I've used that were longer than a few seconds.  All of the movies I recommend on various levels.

This is the second year I've done the 4/20 Holiday Show.  I got the idea when I was a truck driver listening to Sirius Radio's Hardattak, and "High Times" writer Bobby Black, who also hosted a weekly Stoner Rock show called "Contact High" took over the airwaves that day and just jammed a bunch of rock.  Of course, he had some high profile guests and general debauchery ensued.  Now he did a good job with the music that day, though he really did seem to have a limited catalog, but he was able to take the focus off the music a bit with his access.  Obviously I can't.  So here we have 2 hours of kick-ass tunes, a little comedy and a lot of smoke.

As this is the 4/20 Holiday Edition of Sucking the 70's, I'm going to emphasize my recommendation for documentarian, and former Bill Hicks business partner, Kevin Booth's "How Weed Won the West."  Along with throwing out recommendations for Booth's last movie "American Drug War: The Last White Hope" and the more comedic "Super High Me" from comedian Doug Benson and director Michael Blieden.  The Booth films do a very good job of covering the current struggles for NORMLcy in this country.  Admittedly there is no focus on some of the more legimiate concerns from the opposition, but as one would expect you will get plenty of laughs out of the standard, outrageous, opposition propaganda harpooned by film makers.  I should point out that the film is hosted by Alex Jones.  Now, in most cases where Jones is speaking I just shake my head at the NWO fearmongering. I may not agree with the man most of the time, but I cannot deny his effectiveness in this role.
